Is Pilates or yoga better for you?

Aug 20, 2026

Yoga and Pilates can both improve strength, mobility, control and body awareness. The better choice is the one whose emphasis, pace and teaching style match what you want now.

The short answer

Choose Yoga if you are drawn to flowing or held postures, mobility, balance and a stronger connection between movement and breathing. Choose Pilates if you want more direct emphasis on controlled strength, core stability, posture and precise technique.

You do not need to make a permanent choice. Many people enjoy both: Pilates for focused strength and control, Yoga for mobility, balance, breathing and a different way to move.

Completely new? At Embody, Gentle Yoga and Pilates Level 1–2 are the clearest group-class starting points. Private beginner sessions are also available if you would prefer individual guidance first.

Yoga and Pilates: the main differences

There is overlap, but the experience of a typical class is different.

Neither method is universally gentler or harder. The class level, teacher and way the exercises are taught matter more than the label alone.

Yoga may suit you if you want to…

  • Improve mobility and balance
  • Combine movement with focused breathing
  • Choose between calm, accessible and stronger flowing classes
  • Develop body awareness through a varied sequence of postures
  • Make space for a more reflective practice

Pilates may suit you if you want to…

  • Work carefully on posture, technique and coordination
  • Follow a structured method with clear progression
  • Choose a steadier or more workout-led class
  • Develop strength without a fast-paced fitness format

Which Embody class should you try?

If you want a calm, supportive introduction

Try Gentle Yoga or Pilates Level 1–2. Both provide a clear starting point without expecting you to arrive with established experience.

If you prefer a steadier physical pace

Gentle Yoga offers slower sequences with attention to breathing and comfortable movement. Bodycare Pilates takes a gentler approach to controlled strength, posture and mobility.

If you want more challenge

Yoga Flow is the strongest and most continuous regular Yoga option. Dynamic Pilates adds more endurance and functional strength work once you are comfortable with the fundamentals.

If you are returning after injury or treatment

Speak to the teacher before booking, particularly if you have pain, movement restrictions or advice from a clinician. A private session may be a more suitable first step when you need individual attention; group classes are not a substitute for medical assessment or rehabilitation.

What if you still cannot decide?

Try one of each and compare how you feel during the class and afterwards. The right choice is often clearer through experience than through theory.
