Pregnancy Massage: Benefits, Comfort and When to Check First

Pregnancy massage is a treatment adapted around your stage of pregnancy, comfort and current wellbeing. It offers supported time to rest while a trained therapist adjusts positioning, pressure and areas of focus for your changing body.
The short answer
For many people with an uncomplicated pregnancy, an appropriately adapted massage can be a comfortable way to relax and ease everyday muscular tension. At Embody Wellness, pregnancy massage is available after the first trimester and begins with a consultation so the treatment can be tailored to you.
You will usually lie on your side with pillows and bolsters for support. Your therapist can focus on areas such as the lower back, hips, neck and shoulders while continually adjusting pressure and position.
Pregnancy massage supports wellbeing; it does not diagnose or treat pregnancy complications. If your pregnancy is high risk, you have new or unexplained symptoms, or your maternity team has advised restrictions, speak to your midwife or doctor before booking.
What is pregnancy massage?
Pregnancy massage is not a single fixed technique. It is a massage appointment in which the therapist adapts ordinary therapeutic and relaxation techniques to pregnancy.
The treatment is shaped by how many weeks pregnant you are, how comfortable you feel, your health history and what you want from the session. Some clients mainly want quiet time to rest; others ask for gentle attention around areas carrying more everyday tension.
The aim is a comfortable, responsive treatment—not deep or aggressive work and not a promise to correct a medical condition.
How is the treatment adapted?
- Side-lying or another supported position replaces prolonged flat-on-the-back positioning.
- Pillows, bolsters and careful draping help support the bump, hips, knees and upper body.
- Pressure is agreed with you and can be changed throughout the appointment.
- The therapist avoids or modifies areas that are uncomfortable or unsuitable.
- Products are selected with pregnancy and your individual sensitivities in mind.
North Bristol NHS Trust guidance on pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain includes massage in a chair or side-lying rather than on the stomach.
What may pregnancy massage help with?
A well-adapted appointment may provide:
- relaxation and dedicated time away from everyday demands;
- temporary easing of ordinary muscular tightness;
- greater comfort around the lower back, hips, neck and shoulders;
- a calmer transition into rest or sleep;
- supportive touch in a setting where you can change position or pressure whenever needed.
The NHS includes massage among its suggestions for easing ordinary back pain in pregnancy. Very painful backache, pain accompanied by bleeding, fever or urinary symptoms, or pain that may indicate early labour needs clinical assessment rather than a massage appointment.
What should you expect at a pregnancy massage?
1. A short consultation
Your therapist will ask how many weeks pregnant you are, how you are feeling, whether there are any pregnancy or health concerns, and which areas you would like addressed or avoided. This is the time to mention recent changes, medication, skin sensitivity or advice from your maternity team.
2. Supported positioning
You will be helped into a comfortable position, usually lying on your side. Pillows and bolsters support the body so you do not have to hold yourself in place. Positioning can be changed at any point.
3. An agreed treatment focus
The therapist may work across the back, hips, legs, feet, arms, neck and shoulders according to your needs and suitability. Pregnancy massage should feel attentive and reassuring. Tell your therapist immediately if anything feels uncomfortable, too warm, too firm or simply not right.
4. Time to get up slowly
At the end of the treatment you will be given time to sit up and stand when ready. It is sensible to leave a little space after the appointment rather than rushing straight into a demanding schedule.
What does the research say?
A 2021 systematic review of randomised controlled trials reported possible reductions in stress and back or leg discomfort, with few reported adverse effects. However, the studies were varied and only two trials reported side effects, so the authors called for better safety reporting.
A separate systematic review and meta-analysis found possible benefits for anxiety and depressive symptoms, but none of its included trials had a low risk of bias.
The balanced conclusion: pregnancy massage may be an enjoyable and supportive form of wellbeing care, but the evidence does not justify promises that it will treat pregnancy complications or guarantee a particular physical or emotional result.
When should you check before booking?
Ask your midwife or doctor before booking if your pregnancy is high risk, you have a diagnosed complication, you have been advised to restrict activity or treatment, or you are uncertain whether massage is suitable.
Do not use a massage appointment to assess urgent or unexplained symptoms. Contact your maternity team or NHS services promptly if you experience symptoms such as vaginal bleeding, sudden swelling, a severe headache, vision changes, chest pain, unexplained breathlessness, or pain and swelling in one leg.

Pregnancy wellbeing at Embody
Pregnancy massage can sit alongside other forms of appropriate self-care. The right route depends on whether you want a focused treatment, a longer ritual or supported movement.
Pregnancy massage and the Mother-to-Be Ritual
Choose a 60-minute pregnancy massage when you want the appointment focused on supported rest and massage.
For a longer experience, the Mother-to-Be Ritual combines pregnancy massage with a Caudalie facial and pampering foot massage. Both options are available after the first trimester.
Pregnancy massage and the Mother-to-Be Ritual can also be given through our gift vouchers.
Dedicated pregnancy and suitable studio classes
Our dedicated Pregnancy Yoga class welcomes all trimesters and does not require previous yoga experience. If attending during your first trimester, GP or midwife approval is recommended.
The same page identifies selected Gentle Yoga, Chair Yoga, Pilates Level 1–2, Bodycare Pilates and Yoga Flow sessions that may accept pregnant students. These are not automatically suitable for everyone: you will generally need an established pre-pregnancy practice, appropriate modifications and approval from the named teacher.
Check the live schedule and any cover teacher before every visit, as not every teacher is trained and insured to accept pregnant students.

When can I have a pregnancy massage at Embody?
Embody offers pregnancy massage after the first trimester. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, a complication or any uncertainty about suitability, obtain individual advice from your midwife or doctor before booking.
How will I lie during the massage?
You will usually lie on your side with pillows and bolsters supporting the body. Your therapist will help adjust the position and can change it whenever needed.
Can I choose the pressure and areas of focus?
Yes. Your therapist will discuss pressure and focus during the consultation and adapt the treatment throughout. Tell them immediately if you want a position, technique or pressure changed.
Is pregnancy massage a medical treatment?

Can I give pregnancy massage as a gift?
Yes. You can choose pregnancy massage, the Mother-to-Be Ritual or a flexible-value option through our gift vouchers.
Can I combine massage with pregnancy classes?
Potentially. Our dedicated Pregnancy Yoga class is the clearest route. Selected general classes may accept pregnant students only with the named teacher’s approval, suitable previous experience and appropriate modifications. Check the pregnancy and postnatal classes page before attending.
