OSTEOPATHY

Osteopathy at Embody Wellness in Vauxhall and Nine Elms, South London

Osteopathy is a system of musculoskeletal manual medicine, so it deals directly with joint and muscle problems, but also, through resolving lack of mobility, imbalances or restrictions it can have an effect on circulation and nervous supply and therefore indirectly on structures reliant on those.  It is a holistic treatment, which means that as well as concentrating on areas directly generating pain or demonstrating loss of function your practitioner will aim to identify and resolve others that may be contributing directly or indirectly.

Most people come to see an osteopath when they experience pain or loss of function.  Commonly people think of osteopaths as dealing with back problems but there are a range of conditions which are appropriate to osteopathic care including:

    • Some types of headache
    • Neck problems
    • Thoracic outlet syndrome, which may cause altered sensation in the arms
    • Shoulder problems, including impingement
    • Arm and elbow problems
    • Wrist problems including carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Back problems and sciatica
    • Hip and pelvis dysfunction
    • Knee and leg pain
    • Foot and Ankle problems

The issues may be due to wear and tear, a trauma including sports injury, or poor work posture and may be recent or long-standing.

Your care program may include postural advice and/or exercises to do at home, as well as lifestyle advice in order to help improve your condition and prevent it recurring.

The first appointment is longer than usual so the osteopath can ask details about your condition. They will also take a detailed medical history, to be sure what forms of treatment are most appropriate, as well as determining whether the problem may be caused or exacerbated by an underlying systemic condition. They will then perform a postural assessment, to identify asymmetries, or imbalances in muscle tone etc. You will normally be asked to undress to your underwear for this, if you prefer to bring some short shorts to wear this is usually fine. We also have gowns for those who would feel uncomfortable otherwise, and you are always welcome to bring a friend.  If there is any concern over any problem that you report or that they Osteo finds, further tests will be conducted or you may be referred to an appropriate expert.  Your treatment will almost always start on the first visit.

Slave to the rhythm

In this blog post Damian looks at new research which sheds light on the importance of a regular body clock for back health and reducing inflammation.
