How to stop the ‘busy’ cycle

“The more we try to do the less we get done” (Rob Bravo, Talking Talent).

Have you ever experienced this feeling? You feel so ‘busy’, adding more and more things to your To-Do list, but it feels like you’re treading water and not actually getting anything done? I know I sure have. That’s why Rob’s comment above really stuck when I heard it. I was at a networking event and he was sharing insights from how he brings wellbeing into his own life. (He’s the Director of Wellbeing in the company he works for, so he kinda needs to know what he’s talking about 😉).

Rob shared his own three key principles he practices, which I just loved:

  • Put the big rocks in place first
  • Practice self-compassion
  • Dial down ‘being perfect’

Simply put. Sounds great. Yet how do we go about putting this to practice? Or what’s really behind the scenes that makes them so critical? The principles certainly tap into what I know for sure:

We’re all just doing the best we can at any point in time, with the resources we currently have available to us.

AND

We’re also all faced with universal ‘fears’. Things that are at the heart of what holds us back in our lives, or what keeps us busy.

Am I good enough?

Will I be judged?

Do I belong? Am I loved?

Our brains were designed for ‘survival’ which means the instant reaction for it is always going to be “how can I best protect you right now?”. Super duper helpful back in the day, fighting off lions and tigers and bears… Not always that helpful when we’re wanting to get unstuck in our lives, perform better, or reconnect with the spark within us. So how do we keep moving forward and not let these fears unpin us?

In my experience the most important step you must take is to create awareness. If you have no idea that these thoughts and questions and fears are holding you back each and every time you make a decision in your life, how can you expect your results to change? The more you can become your own personal observer of your life, to bring curiosity to the patterns of behaviour that are running each time you feel great about a decision or frustrated or absolutely stuck. These are all clues. To help you identify what it is that’s driving you. I say to my clients that awareness is 90% of any journey to change in your life. Without it, you have no control of what happens next. With it, you can start to unpick the pattern and put new steps in place.

That’s what our Refresh and Recharge wellbeing workshops are all about. Creating space for you to bring more awareness into your life. To start to ask questions you may not have thought to ask yourself before. And in doing so, to give you back the control you’ve been missing that’s been putting you in the ‘busy’ spin. What could you do this week to bring more awareness into your life? And when you start to observe and notice how you are each day, ask yourself ‘how is this serving me?’ And, what’s one thing I could do differently?

Want to short-circuit the busy loop and understand what’s driving your decision-making in your life right now? Start with giving yourself permission to pause… Join us at our next Refresh & Recharge Wellbeing Workshop – we combine life coaching, yoga & meditation to give you simple strategies to bring more balance into your lives. Saturday 28th October 2:00 pm – 4:15 pm. Book here.

Danielle Brooker brings her own experience of getting ‘unstuck’ and moving from a place of feeling unworthy and burnt out to reconnecting with herself and living life fully. Learning to say yes to herself more often she switched gears in her career and followed her heart from Australia to London. Passionate about growth, great coffee and all things wellbeing, her personal coaching business, The Daisy Patch, now helps others who are stuck—wanting to reclaim their lives from ‘busy’ and reconnect with themselves.

Danielle is a certified practitioner of Meta Dynamics, the next level of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Her clients are looking to identify the root cause of their discomforts—whether that be in their careers, relationships, or life itself—not just the symptoms, so that the change they make really lasts. Through her workshops and individual client programmes, her focus is always on a personal approach, sharing her own journey, and helping others to bring more wellbeing into their lifestyles.
